What's wrong with Odell Beckham Jr? Dolphins WR out indefinitely with 'undisclosed' injury

2 months ago 91

While Odell Beckham Jr.'s most dynamic years may be behind him, the 31-year-old was still viewed as a valuable offseason addition to the Dolphins WR room.

After missing the 2022 season to rehab a torn ACL, Beckham signed with the Ravens in 2023, snagging 35 receptions for 565 yards and three touchdowns over 14 regular season games. Beckham appeared in both of Baltimore's playoff games and was released by the franchise in March.

Beckham signed with the Dolphins in early May but did not participate in OTAs or offseason minicamp. When training camp opened in late July, Beckham was placed on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

At the end of the preseason, Beckham was moved to the reserve/PUP list, ruling him out of at least the first four games of the 2024 season. Here is more on why Beckham's participation has been limited since joining Miami.

What's wrong with Odell Beckham Jr?

Beckham has been placed on the reserve/PUP list with an undisclosed injury. All reports indicate that Beckham's ailment is one that the Dolphins franchise was aware of during contract negotiations.

Ahead of training camp, Beckham reportedly was placed on the reserve/PUP list because he was "working through minor things," per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

It was revealed that Beckham underwent an offseason procedure, according to an Aug. 27 report from Ian Rapoport and Pelissero. The details of the procedure were not disclosed.

Dolphins general manager Chris Grier explained that the decision to place Beckham on the reserve/PUP list was made out of an abundance of caution.

"We were very hopeful that it would be around Week 1 hee," Grier told the media. "To be honest with you guys, we put him down [to the PUP list]. He did not want to go down and he is very close … for us, it was the long play.

"We didn't want him to rush back, feeling that he had to rush back and then something happens and sets us back. So, this was more Mike (McDaniel) and I sitting down, talking with Kyle (Johnston, head athletic trainer), the trainers and we just felt was best for him long haul."

At the earliest, Beckham can return when the Dolphins visit the Patriots in Week 5. Miami is idle during Week 6 and should Beckham sit for the first five games, he could get an extra week to recover without missing an additional game.

Beckham is slotted to fall in as Miami's WR3 after stars Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. The Dolphins WR room also features Braxton Berrios, Robbie Chosen and Grant DuBose.
